This weekend we were grateful that our friends invited us over for a Thanksgiving dinner. It was more friends than the house could easily hold - but nobody minded.
Thanksgiving isn't a holiday I grew up with in Slovakia. Here, it has become one of my favourites.
Because it isn’t really about the dinner. It’s about who shows up.
Whistler is a town people arrive in. Most of us came from somewhere else — another province, another country — and at some point, the people around a table like this one became the reason we stayed.
So this year I'm thankful for exactly that. For friends who feel like family when family is an ocean away. For friends who open their door, and a town where a Monday night can look like this.
And to everyone who worked through the long weekend — in kitchens and shops, at the health care centre, behind the wheel of a bus — thank you. I hope you got your plate too, even if it was a day later.
Turkey, tofu or pie for breakfast: Happy Thanksgiving Whistler!
